Shillong, March 06 : National People’s Party national president and Tura MP took oath as the new chief minister of Meghalaya on Tuesday.
Conrad who is leading the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance (MDA) coalition government was administered the oath of office and secrecy by governor, Ganga Prasad at the lawn of the Raj Bhavan.
Along with Conrad, 11 legislators – four from the NPP, Prestone Tynsong, James K. Sangma, Comingone Ymbon, Sniawbhalang Dhar, three from the United Democratic Party, Metbah Lyngdoh, Lahkmen Rymbui and Kyrmen Shylla, two from the People’s Democratic Front, Hamletson Dohling and Banteidor Lyngdoh, and one from the BJP, A.L. Hek were sworn in as ministers.
Among those presence were Conrad’s mother, Soradini K. Sangma, his wife, M Chandi A. Sangma, his youngest sister and South Tura MLA, Agatha K. Sangma besides top leaders of the BJP which include its national president, Amit Shah, Union home minister, Rajnath Singh, chief nministers of Assam, Sarbananda Sonowal, Pema Khandu of Arunachal Pradesh, Biren Singh of Manipur, former chief ministers of Assam, P.K. Mahanta, Zoramthanga of Mizoram, and other officials.
Conrad, the youngest son of former Lok Sabha Speaker, late Purno A. Sangma returned to state politics as chief minister without being elected as MLA.
The Tura MP required to get elected as MLAÂ within six months.
Though it is yet to finalise, most probably, Agatha would pave way for Conrad from South Tura constituency, while Agatha might resign and contest the Lok Sabha by-poll from Tura parliamentary seat.
Conrad who was the MLA of Selsella constituency from 2008 to 2013, had held positions as finance minister of the then Meghalaya Progressive Alliance government from 2008 to 2009 and as leader of opposition of the Meghalaya Assembly from 2009 to 2013.
