Fear grips Shillong as another person stabbed by masked miscreants

Shillong, Mar 5: Another person was stabbed by a group of masked men in Shillong on Thursday, sending more fear among the people in the city.

Reportedly, hundreds of people are fleeing Ichamati village in Shella to Assam.

Sanidul Islam (21), from Assam’s Barpeta district, was stabbed by a group of four to five masked men at Mawkhar area near YMCA, police said.

Islam was rushed to Shillong civil hospital and doctors said, he is out of danger.

Though, the state police stated that the overall situation across the State is “by and large normal”, fresh incidents of violence has been reported from couple of places.

Miscreants attempted to torch a private vehicle AS-01-DV-4869 at Umsning Pata Rim by-pass under Umsning police station. However, no one was injured in the attack but the wheel cap of one of the front tyres was damaged.

Miscreants also pelted stones at a local taxi which was parked on the roadside at Nongmensong

Meanwhile, panic-stricken migrant labourers, employed in stone quarries are fleeing Ichamati village to Assam following February 28 clashed between Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) members and non-tribals.

A KSU member was killed and several others were injured in the clash.

On the other hand, the district authorities decided to clamped night curfew from 2100 hours to 0500 hours on Friday to prevent any act of violence.

Meanwhile, mobile internet resumed in Meghalaya on Thursday, six days after it was suspended, following clashes between the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) activists and non-tribals after the anti-Citizenship (Amendment) Act meeting at Ichamati village on February 28.

“We have restored the banned on mobile internet in remaining four districts – East Khasi Hills, West Khasi Hills, South West Khasi Hills and Ri-Bhoi – this morning as the situation is limping back to normalcy,” Additional secretary home, Cyril .V.D. Diengdoh said.

The government had restored mobile internet service in East and West Jaintia hills district respectively on Tuesday night.

District Magistrate of East Khasi Hills, Matsiewdor War Nongbri confirmed that more than 200 migrant labourers from Assam have left Ichamati village following the incident.

Some of the migrant labourers, who were mostly working in stone quarries, sought refuge in the nearby jungles after the violence broke out in the village between KSU activists and the non-tribals on February 28.

The violence came after the KSU organised a meeting at Ichamati to enlighten the people against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), and on the demand to implement the ILP in Meghalaya.

The labourers were hauled in trucks from Ichamati and dropped at Jorabat from where they proceeded further on to their respective homes.

“After the violence, our employer provided us places to hide as there was tension. We stayed in the jungle before the BSF and local police contacted us,” one of the labourers said.

Shillong had witnessed violence in past one week following clashes between the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) activists and non-tribals after the anti-Citizenship (Amendment) Act meeting at Ichamati village on February 28.

KSU member Lurshai Hynñiewta, 35, of Sohra, had succumbed to his injuries following the clash.

Eight persons, Sushan Das, Ranjit Baidya, Bijit Baidya, Kanal Baidya, Sajol Das, Joy Sharma, Indromohan Sharma, and Rajesh Sharma, have been arrested in the case.

Vegetable vendor, Rupchand Dewan, was stabbed to death by masked men at ïewduh while eight others were injured in the stabbing spree incident on February 29.

Meanwhile, Director General of Police R Chandranathan said that cases were registered during the unrest which subsisted in the past few days, and some important cases have been transferred to Crime Investigation Department of the state, to cause further investigation.
