SHILLONG, JAN 5: The Meghalaya unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Monday underscored the critical importance of fencing along the India–Bangladesh international border, citing security concerns and the need for speedy completion of the project.
“Fencing along the international border with Bangladesh is very important. We are very concerned about our borders with Bangladesh and we hope for the speedy completion of the border fencing. People should understand that fencing is very important,” BJP state general secretary Wankitbok Pohshna told reporters.
He said the issue of border fencing began receiving serious attention only after the BJP assumed power at the Centre.
“It is only after the BJP took over the government at the Centre that border fencing has been taken on a serious note,” Pohshna said.
Referring to infrastructure development in border areas, he added that facilities have been significantly strengthened in recent years.
“If you look at the infrastructure development in border areas, it has been strengthened after the BJP government took over. Work is ongoing, and we expect the border fencing to be completed with the passage of time,” he said.
The BJP leader also condemned recent social media threats allegedly emanating from Bangladesh, terming them unacceptable and asserting that the party remains vigilant.
“We have seen the threats through social media, and we cannot accept that because of threats by those opposing the system in Bangladesh, we should not take part. Yes, we are vigilant,” he stated.
Dismissing any suggestion of a threat to the ‘Seven Sisters’, Pohshna said the North-East is an integral part of India and enjoys firm security.
“The threat to the seven sisters is something which makes us want to laugh because we are in a country which provides firm security, and the North-East is an integral part of India. No one can change that,” he said.
Commenting on the situation in Bangladesh, Pohshna described it as volatile and expressed confidence that the Centre is closely monitoring developments.
“The situation in Bangladesh is very volatile as there is no government. I am sure the Central government is taking note of all these issues,” he added.
