Nongpoh, July 26: The Federation of Khasi Jaintia and Garo People (FKJGP), North Khasi Hills District, led by General Secretary Ricky Majaw, Assistant Information Secretary Banroy Wahlang, Umiam Circle President Lambha Kurbah, and other members, carried out a surprise inspection at the Indian Oil Corporation Limited (IOCL) LPG Bottling Plant at Pyllun in Ri-Bhoi District on Friday.

The inspection was prompted by growing concerns over the employment of a large number of non-local daily wage workers at the facility. FKJGP members sought to verify whether these workers possessed valid labour licenses and other required documents.

According to reports, while the plant’s management initially agreed to furnish the documents, they failed to do so even after several hours. In a suspicious turn of events, many workers disappeared from the premises during the inspection, with several reportedly fleeing while still on duty.

Frustrated by the lack of cooperation, the FKJGP team proceeded to the IOCL office to engage with the authorities. However, officials were unable to provide any of the requested documentation. Village authorities of Pyllun also revealed that IOCL had failed to renew the No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the Dorbar Shnong (Village Council), further raising questions about the plant’s operational compliance.

Speaking to the media, FKJGP General Secretary Ricky Majaw expressed serious concern over IOCL’s alleged negligence in ensuring proper documentation, particularly labour licenses for non-local workers. He highlighted the ongoing influx of migrant workers from neighbouring Assam and reiterated the organization’s commitment to safeguarding local interests.

The FKJGP has issued a one-week deadline for IOCL to furnish all relevant documents and has called for a temporary halt of operations at the plant until full compliance is achieved.

Supporting FKJGP’s stance, Bah Anthony Passah, the Headman of Pyllun village, stated that the organization acted appropriately in light of the workers’ failure to produce valid documents.
