Shillong, August 28, 2025 – The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI), in collaboration with the Department of Food Safety, Meghalaya, the Federation of Street Vendors of India, and Nestlé India under the FoSTaC (Food Safety Training & Certification) initiative, on 27 August conducted a training programme for street food vendors at the Gurdwara, Shillong, under the theme “Serve Safe Food.”
The programme was inaugurated by Ms. B.L. Pakynteiñ, MCS, Director of Tourism, Meghalaya, who attended as the Chief Guest.
In her keynote address, Ms. Pakynteiñ underscored the vital role of street food vendors in society, both as providers of affordable meals and as contributors to livelihood opportunities. She noted that proper training in hygiene and food safety not only enhances consumer confidence but also strengthens Meghalaya’s reputation as a safe and hygienic food destination, boosting its appeal to tourists.
Other dignitaries who addressed the gathering included Mr. Surojit Mukherjee, Head – Branch Corporate Affairs, Nestlé India Ltd.; Mrs. D.B.S. Mukhim, Deputy Commissioner (Food Safety) – Enforcement, Meghalaya; and representatives from the Art of Living, Shillong.
The training focused on instilling awareness, responsibility, and practical skills related to food safety, safe handling, and cleanliness. Organizers highlighted that such initiatives ultimately benefit both vendors and consumers, while also strengthening the tourism sector in the state.
The event forms part of an ongoing series of programmes aimed at empowering street food vendors with the tools and knowledge to deliver safer, healthier, and more hygienic food to the public.
