Shillong, September 13, 2025:
Dr. Donwa Dethwelson Lapang, former Chief Minister of Meghalaya and one of the state’s most respected political figures, passed away on the night of September 12, 2025, at Bethany Hospital, Shillong. He was 96.
Dr. Lapang, affectionately known as “Maheh,” is survived by his wife, Kong Amethyst Lynda Jomes Blah, and his children, including Bah B.R. Blah.
His mortal remains have been brought to his residence at Lower Lachumiere, Shillong. The funeral service will be held on September 15, 2025, beginning at 10 a.m. at his residence and will be officiated by the Jaïaw Presbyterian Church.
Following the service, the state government will accord an official funeral tribute at Madan Student, Jaïaw at 1 p.m. Thereafter, the Church will take over the final rites, and Dr. Lapang will be laid to rest at the Weiking Cemetery, Jaïaw.
Dr. Lapang was a towering figure in Meghalaya politics, known for his decades of public service and leadership. His passing marks the end of an era for the state.
