Foundation Stone laid for Juvenile School

Shillong, Nov 17: Chief Justice of Meghalaya High Court, Justice Mohammad Yaqoob Mir, laid the foundation stone for the construction of the Shillong Juvenile School at Mawkasiang (Mawdiangdiang), New Shillong Township on Saturday.

The foundation stone laying ceremony was attended by Justice SR Sen, in-charge Juvenile Justice Committee, Additional Chief Secretary, Social Welfare, H Marwein, Commissioner & Secretary Social Welfare, T Dkhar, Director Social Welfare, E Kharmalki, senior advocate and officials of the High Court and inmates of Juvenile Home.

Spread over 25,000 sq.ft of land, the cost of the Juvenile School was estimated at Rs. 5 crore approximately. The School will have classes from Class 1 to Class 10.

Justice Yaqoob Mir, in his speech, said that education is one of the primary rehabilitative services that must be provided to children staying in juvenile homes. He said that the school will help in mainstreaming the children through observation, education and vocational training as incorporated in the Juvenile Justice Act.

He also said that with the proper support and care, these children can return to society as bright future of the state and country. He also hoped that the school will cater not only to the educational needs of young kids, but also develop them into good human beings.
