SHILLONG, DEC 11: A 35-year-old Ghanaian national, identified as William Addo Agyei, was arrested by West Jaintia Hills police for travelling on a fake identity.
West Jaintia Hills Superintendent of Police, Jagpal Singh, informed that the accused had initially identified himself as “Stanley Obayendo”. However, during re-interrogation, he admitted to lying and disclosed his real name.
Agyei, a resident of Kumasi Accra in Ghana, had entered India on a medical visa in June 2025. The visa expired after three months, and although he applied for an extension, he reportedly did not receive any response from the Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO).
Recently, he received an email from the FRRO directing him to report either to their office or to the Banaswadi Police Station in Bengaluru, Karnataka. Instead of complying, he approached a tout named Frank, who attempted to facilitate his illegal crossing into Bangladesh through Meghalaya.
Locals in the village intercepted him and handed him over to the police, leading to his arrest.
A case has been registered against Agyei for travelling on a fake identity, and further investigation is underway.
