Shillong, October: Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma has announced that the Government of Meghalaya is implementing a series of long-term urban development initiatives aimed at easing traffic congestion in Shillong and ensuring the optimal use of underutilized land across the city.
Speaking to the media, the Chief Minister said that the government is planning to develop multi-purpose commercial spaces that will include hotels, shops for local entrepreneurs, and youth-oriented facilities designed to create livelihood opportunities and boost economic activity.
“We are looking at a mix – hotels, shops for small entrepreneurs, and spaces for local people – so that youngsters can generate value and livelihood. The idea is to enhance the overall commercial potential,” Sangma stated.
Addressing the persistent issue of traffic congestion in Shillong, the Chief Minister said that while ambitious projects like metro systems or cable cars have been discussed, they face challenges related to financial feasibility and limited urban space. As an immediate measure, the government will focus on creating additional parking lots and expanding existing roads where possible.
“We need to decongest our roads first. Parking lots will ensure vehicles are off the roadside, allowing smoother traffic movement, and pedestrian zones can also be developed,” he said.
Sangma further mentioned that discussions are ongoing with the Assembly Secretariat, and once the new Assembly building is completed, the existing site may be repurposed for road expansion, parking facilities, and dedicated taxi lanes.
The Chief Minister reaffirmed the government’s commitment to urban renewal and traffic management, emphasizing that these projects will not only ease congestion but also enhance Shillong’s commercial and infrastructural landscape in the years ahead.
