Shillong, Apr 26: The state government has set a target to complete the construction of the new market complex at Polo within this year.
Urban Affairs Minister, Hamletson Dohling on Friday told reporters that around 75 per cent of works have been completed and the remaining works include only the finishing part.
“We will try to complete it within this year. We are hopeful that we are able to inaugurate the market complex by the month of June or July,†Dohling said.
The complex is having a total of 297 stalls.
Over Rs 23 crore was sanctioned for the project which is being implemented by the National Buildings Construction Company (NBCC) on a 5,000 square meter plot of land.
He informed that a committee will be constituted once the NBCC handed over the complex to the Shillong Municipal Board for allotment of stalls and others.
Stating that the market complex is also being designed as a tourist attraction, he said that the objective of the project was also to redevelop including beautification of the Polo area.
Earlier, the government had also proposed to acquire the triangle junction in Polo area alongside the implementation of the Polo market project. On this, Dohling said the matter is still in the discussion stage.
