Shillong, October 2: The Federation of All School Teachers of Meghalaya (FASTOM), representing Adhoc teachers, has officially called off its agitation today following written assurances from the state government regarding long-pending demands. The decision came after Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma invited FASTOM leaders for talks on October 1, subsequent to discussions held on September 30.
According to FASTOM Vice President S. Jungai, the government has agreed to introduce Basic Pay as per the category of teachers, along with several additional benefits. These include:
Dearness Allowance (DA): To be granted annually in line with inflation.
Central Provident Fund (CPF): With contributions of 8% each from both government and teachers.
Death-cum-Retirement Gratuity (DCRG): To be worked out in consultation with the Education Department.
The government has sought three months’ time to prepare the new Pay Structure covering Basic Pay, DA, CPF, and other salary components. Teachers have urged that the system be implemented from April 1, 2026, and extended to all categories of Adhoc teachers — Pre-Primary, Primary, Higher Secondary, Science, Hindi, evening schools, and step schools. Preliminary estimates suggest the revised salary package will amount to around ₹10,000.
Jungai confirmed that leaders from both Shillong and Tura unanimously agreed to withdraw and suspend the agitation after receiving the government’s written assurance. With this, the prolonged protest by Adhoc teachers has concluded, while the community now awaits the rollout of the new pay framework.
