Shillong June 11: As many as 12 organisations have asked the state government to evict illegal settlers from Them ïew Mawlong within one week while deciding to wait for the recommendation of the High Level Committee on genuine settlers, who are working under Shillong Municipal Board.
“We want the state government to start evicting those who were identified as illegal settlers as per Eviction of Illegal Occupants from Public Premises within one week,†HYC president Robertjune Kharjahrin said.
The meeting was convened by the Hynñiewtrep Youth Council (HYC) and attended by representatives of 11 other organizations.
The organizations also asked the state government not to grant any special rights to sweepers residing at Them ïew Mawlong, while pointing out that if the government gave them the right to reside in office quarters even after their retirement, others will also start demanding the same.
Kharjahrin said that so far, the government and the SMB till date cannot provide quarters for all employees including officers.
Demanding relocation of sweepers from Them ïew Mawlong, the organizations suggested the government to provide them rent allowance to stay in rented houses.
The meeting also resolved to urge all concern to refrain using Punjabi lane for Them ïew Mawlong as the land does not belongs to them.
The 12 groups also condemned people who came from outside the state for attempting to interfere and communalise the issue.
