Shillong, Nov 23: The Meghalaya government has been asked to issue a notification that will direct government servants should declare their assets including sources of income under the Meghalaya Lokayukta Act, 2014.
Michael N. Syiem, who is spearheading the campaign for an independent Lokayukta in Meghalaya said on Thursday that the state government should issue the notification pending the appointment of chairperson and four members of Lokayukta where public servants right from the chief minister down to the lowest rank staff to declare their assets including assets of spouse and dependents, and their sources of income.
Syiem also said that political parties and politicians have been talking about accountability and transparency and challenged them to declare their support for the effective implementation of the Meghalaya Lokayukta Act, 2014.
“If the state government is really sincere in curbing acts of corruption, issuing of notification related to declaration of assets would be the first step since implementation of the Act is being delayed by not appointing the chairperson and members of Lokayukta till date,” Syiem said.
He also alleged that politicians and bureaucrats were scared if the Lokayukta is implemented because if they failed to declare their assets, such assets would be seized.
