Govt implements component of shelter for urban homeless in six municipal boards

Shillong, Apr 25: The state government is implementing the component of shelter for urban homeless under the Deendayal Antyodaya Yojana-National Urban Livelihoods Mission (DAY-NULM) in six municipal boards.

These include in Shillong, Tura, Jowai, Baghmara and Resubelpara, according to an affidavit filed by the Director of Urban Affairs Department before the Meghalaya High Court.

The High Court was hearing a public interest litigation filed by one Khroolamsalanki Pariat.

In the affidavit, it was informed that the ground floor of shelter home at Kenche’s Trace, Shillong is almost completed, and approval for construction of the first floor has also been accorded.

Stating that the shelter home at Jowai, West Jaintia Hills District is 100 per cent completed, the department however said electricity supply connection is still pending.

The shelter home at Tura is also 100 per cent completed, but retaining wall, compound wall and approach road would be taken up after the shelter home becomes functional.

Regarding the Detailed Project Report (DPR) for Williamnagar shelter home, it said that after deliberations, the Deputy Commissioner has been requested to spare some Government accommodations for shelter home, but responses are awaited.

Shelter home has been surveyed at Resubelpara and Baghmara, and the Deputy Commissioners concerned have been requested to identify Government buildings/quarters for providing shelter to the homeless.

Meanwhile the division bench headed by Chief Justice Mohammad Yaqoob Mir in its order passed on Thursday lauded the positive steps taken by the authorities concerned.

The bench directed the Additional Sr GA to file the latest status about the follow up, before the next date of hearing scheduled to be held after three weeks.

During the hearing, Counsel for the petitioner said that if steps are translated into action, same would advance for the cause of the homeless.
