Shillong | July 26, 2025 — The relocation of street vendors to the MUDA Parking Lot at Khyndai Lad has brought a sense of relief to many, offering shelter from Shillong’s unpredictable weather. However, the celebration is tempered by growing concerns over the lack of basic infrastructure at the site.
Speaking to reporters, several vendors expressed gratitude to the authorities for taking the long-overdue step of allotting them designated vending spaces. “It’s a good initiative. At least now we are not out on the streets in the rain,” one vendor remarked.
Despite their cooperation in relocating, the vendors now urge the Government and concerned departments to take the next step, ensuring that the space is functional and humane. They cited la ack of electricity, no access to drinking water, no sanitation facilities, and no ceiling fans, which have made the summer heat nearly unbearable.
“The stalls are located in a corner of the parking lot. There’s no water, no electricity, and no fans. It gets suffocating, especially during the afternoon hours,” said another vendor.
With the vendors fulfilling their part of the agreement, the ball is now in the Government’s court to make the MUDA parking lot a truly viable space for livelihood. Civic bodies and local administration are being urged to expedite the provisioning of essential amenities without delay.
