Shillong, Sept 7: A traditional head of a village in East Khasi Hills district, who decided to contest the upcoming 2018 Assembly election, will soon launch a campaign “voice for change” to expose the failures of a sitting legislator.

Olet Kharsohnoh, headman of Jongksha village, will contest against UDP sitting MLA Remington Pyngrope from Mawkynrew constituency as an Independent candidate.

Speaking to reporters here on Thursday, Kharsohnoh said that he decided to join the fray after seeing various problems faced by the people of the area, would launch a campaign titled, “voice for change.”

The campaign will kick start from September 9 from Thynroit village and then spread to other villages to highlight seven major issues which have badly affected the people of the area.

Kharshohnoh said that the issues include, encroachment of MUDA in villages, suppression of farmers, unemployment, health facilities and others.

“Till today there are no major developments in the constituency except distribution of CGI sheets. It is sad that real development and policies are still missing,” he said while reiterating that the campaign would ensure people are made aware of such failures.

He also added that Mawkynrew constituency suffers from lack of proper healthcare facilities.

Citing an instance, he said, “The PHC at Jongksha is so ill equipped that people with simple illness have to be admitted in other hospitals. The PHC has failed to cater to medical needs of the people despite having been established for the past 21 years.”
