Shillong July 9: Landslides, rise of water level in streams and rivers were reported on Tuesday across Meghalaya due to heavy rain in the past few days.
Sources said that continuous rainfall since Sunday has caused landslides in many places which led to damage of roads in city and other rural areas.
A road at Malki in the city was damaged due to landslide and a road in Mawsynram was also cut off on Sunday due to heavy rain.
Sources said that the Umkhrah river in the city has also reached the danger level on Tuesday evening and many areas were inundated. Roads were also flooded because of poor drainage system.
At Polo area, floodwaters entered the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium and nearby grounds which led to the cancellation of football matches conducted by the Shillong Sports Association at Polo grounds.
Sources said that many places in Garo Hills have submerged under water following heavy rainfall.
There were reports of the collapse of retaining walls and trees as lose soil caved in. There was no report about loss of life in view of the disaster.
Meanwhile a weather forecast by the Indian Meteorological Department said that heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely to occur at isolated places in Meghalaya on July 11 and 12, and heavy to extremely heavy rainfall is likely on Wednesday and Saturday.
An advisory was issued for the public urging them to take extra care during heavy rainfall.
