Nongpoh, Dec 10: The daily movement of thousands of vehicles along National Highway-6 in Ri Bhoi district, combined with the passage of heavy goods-laden trucks, has led to severe congestion and deteriorating road conditions, especially from Shngbangla up to Umling. Commuters travelling through this stretch of the highway have been facing persistent difficulties, with many blaming the lack of proper maintenance by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), the agency responsible for upkeep and repairs. Complaints have also been raised about the collection of toll fees at the 20th Mile Toll Gate despite the road remaining in poor condition.

In response to the worsening situation, two groups led by Eddie G. Kharbani, a UDP leader from Ri Bhoi, along with representatives of the Ri Bhoi Commercial Pick-up Owners’ and Drivers’ Association, met Ri Bhoi Deputy Commissioner Abhilash Baranwal to demand immediate intervention. They urged the DC to direct NHAI to undertake urgent repairs, and warned that if the agency is unable to maintain the highway, toll collection at the 20th Mile plaza should be suspended.

Kharbani said the constant movement of overloaded trucks and frequent police checks, which often slow down traffic, have contributed to the worsening congestion. He added that the groups had earlier raised concerns with the Ri Bhoi Superintendent of Police (SP), particularly regarding the need to screen overloaded vehicles. However, the SP reportedly informed them that the police could not carry out such checks due to jurisdictional limitations.

Unsatisfied with the response, the groups approached the Deputy Commissioner, arguing that the present condition of NH-6 has caused immense hardship to commuters who, despite paying toll fees, are forced to travel on a damaged and congested road. They urged the district administration to intervene and ensure that NHAI addresses the issue at the earliest to restore smooth and safe travel along the highway.
