Shillong, Oct 23: The Meghalaya High Court has directed the involvement and coordination of defence authorities stationed in and around Shillong to ensure clean and hygienic conditions of the city.
In its order issued on Monday, the division bench headed by chief justice Dinesh Maheshwari said, “Having regard to the issues involved, and the priority requirements of ensuring cleanliness and hygienic conditions in and around the city with appropriate involvement and coordination of the authorities, we have requested Assistant Solicitor General, Anuradha Paul to assist the Court on behalf of the Union of India and its different functionaries/authorities stationed in and around the city of Shillong.”
Paul however prayed for a few days’ time to complete her instructions and also to advice the concerned authorities appropriately.
This was after the Garrison Engineer, who attended the meeting of the Supervisory Committee held on October 17, and took steps as falling within his authority.
The bench had earlier directed the Garrison Engineer to attend the meeting for necessary decisions regarding the management of cleanliness around the MES estate.
He however indicated certain other aspects related with the charge of the other military stations etc and has sent a communication in that regard on October 18, to the Joint Secretary to the Government of Meghalaya, Urban Affairs Department.
The next hearing is scheduled on October 30.
Meanwhile, the bench has directed that the Supervisory Committee shall otherwise continue with its weekly meetings as already ordered.
