Shillong Aug 17: The Meghalaya High Court has disposed of a petition filed by People’s Democratic Party (PDF) MDC James Ban Basaiawmoit against the conduct of the election to the post of chief executive member.
During the hearing on the matter on Friday, counsel for the petitioner (Basaiawmoit) moved an application with a prayer to withdraw the petition on the ground that the petitioner is no more interested to pursue the matter.
Granting the request, the Court in its order stated that the case is accordingly dropped and stands disposed of.
Earlier, Basaiawmoit along with his colleague in the party Grace Mary Kharpuri, who is a member from Nongskhen constituency, had filed separate petitions against the state government and Khasi Hills Autonomous District (KHADC) alleging that the conduct of the election to the CEM post was not as per rule.
However with regards to the petition filed by Kharpuri, the court has ordered that the matter be listed after two weeks for hearing.
The election to the CEM post was held on July 13, where NPP member from Nongkrem Hispreaching Son Shylla was elected unopposed as the new chief executive member of the KHADC.
This was also after Kharpuri, who was the candidate of the People’s Democratic Alliance (PDA) failed to turn up during the election.
The election was necessitated following the resignation of the former KHADC chief Pynshngainlang N Syiem, who is also the PDF chairman, from the post after 17 MDCs decided to withdraw support to the PDA-led executive committee.
