Shillong, June 6: The High Level Committee held its first meeting on Wednesday setting the motion for the Meghalaya government’s move to find permanent solution to the long pending issue of rehabilitating settlers residing at

The HLC headed by Deputy Chief Minister, Prestone Tynsong was constituted by the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance government on Monday to look into the nitty-gritty of the issue and suggest measures for permanent solution.
The first meeting chaired by Deputy Chief Minister was held in the main secretariat here and decided to seek all relevant documents before proceeding further.
Others members of the HLC include, urban affairs minister Hamletson Dohling, health minister A.L. Hek, home minister James K. Sangma, sports minister Banteidor Lyngdoh, chief executive member of the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council, P.N. Syiem, besides commissioner and secretary D.P. Wahlang as member secretary of the committee.
Departments that involved in the exercise include urban affairs, Shillong municipal board, Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council and other agencies.
Tynsong told reporters that the committee has requested the departments to share details including court cases in connection with the matter as soon as possible.
“We want to those details within one week, so that the committee will again meet as we want to complete the exercise at the earliest possible,†he said.
The terms of reference of the high-level committee is to examine all relevant records and documents and recommend feasible solution on the issue.
The committee shall submit its recommendations to the government at the earliest.
The issue has been pending for many years with governments in the past having failed to resolve it.
“Our intention very clear as we want to this issue to be resolved once and for all,†Tynsong said.
