Hima Nongspung takes Assam to Court over “illegal” construction of roads

Shillong, Aug 18: The Hima Nongspung in Ri Bhoi district has recently sought the intervention of the Meghalaya High Court into the alleged illegal construction of roads by the Assam government.

Informing this here on Saturday, secretary of the Hima Nongspung Michael Warjri said, “We have filed a petition before the Meghalaya High Court on August 13 against the illegal construction of roads by the Assam government.”

Warjri said that construction of roads from Patgoan, Jimbrigoan to Bakhlapara village and from Mawdongki to Bakhlapara village within Hima Nongspung was done by the Assam’s West Guwahati, Dispur legislator, Ramendra Narayan Kolita.

Stating that the High Court is likely to give its order on the matter after two week, Warjri said that the decision of the Hima to approach the Court was taken after getting no response from the state government even after a petition was submitted to Chief Minister, Conrad K. Sangma on June 27 this year.

“We have completely lost confident on the present state government who have turned a deaf ear and a blind eye to the problem faced by the people residing along the inter-state border due to the continued illegal encroachment of Assam,” he said.

He informed that Kolita had applied for permission from the Meghalaya’s public works department (PWD) for the construction of the two roads at Rs 14 crore and Rs 13 crore respectively on October 18, last year.

“Despite the fact that the state PWD has not granted any permission, the MLA from Assam went ahead with the road construction works. This is highly illegal,” Warjri said.

The secretary of the Hima Nongspung also accused the Assam MLA of failing to pay heed to the request of the Hima which had written a letter requesting him to immediately stop the road construction till permission is granted.

He said that the Hima had also sought the intervention of the Deputy Commissioner of Ri Bhoi district, who immediately took up the matter with the DC of Kamrup district for ensuring that the construction work is immediately stopped.

Warjri said that he had also filed a complaint with the DC against the alleged illegal construction of the Ranibari bridge. “The construction of this bridge is in full swing now,” Warjri said.
