Shillong, May 26: A complaint against Meghalaya home minister, James K. Sangma and South Tura MLA, Agatha K. Sangma was lodged by Congress candidate, Miani D. Shira for allegedly violating the model code of conduct in Ampati.
Miani who is the Congress candidate for the May-28 bye election to Ampati Assembly constituency, lodged the complaint at 2.20 am on Saturday accusing the Home Minister and his sister MLA, Agatha of trying to enter people’s homes and allegedly bribed the voters for votes in favour of the NPP candidate, Clement G. Momin.
South West Garo Hills Superintendent of Police, Bobby S.W. Momin while confirming that the complaint was filed by Shira and received at the police station at around 2.30 am said, “The complaint was received and action will be taken according to law.”
No reactions have come from the Home Minister and the South Tura MLA so far.
Miani alleged in her complaint that the Home Minister and South Tura MLA had reached Taktaki village around 12.30 am and tried to enter people’s home and bribed them with money in favour of votes for the NPP candidate.
According to Miani, when Congress workers and village elders found out, they tried to stop them but they tried to use their power (police securities and power of being the home minister) to take them, and flew vehicles captive.
“The unprecedented event cannot be ignored, and as responsible candidate, as soon as I heard about the incident, I tried complaining by calling in the official complain numbers provided by the election officials, trying my best to be a responsible candidate and encouraged the party workers not to take law in their own hand. Due to non-action even after repeated phone calls, I have no option but to file an FIR against them,†she said.
Miani added that “a just investigation and inquiry is required for free and fair bye election to take place at Ampati.â€
