Shillong, Mar 21: Home Minister James K Sangma said he personally reviewed the case related to the murder of social activist in Jaiñtia Hills, Poipynhun Majaw whose body was found on Tuesday.
“It is very unfortunate that an RTI activist was killed. We are looking into the matter and I am personally reviewing the situation,†the Home Minister said here on Wednesday.
Stating that police are investigating the case, Sangma said that at moment he cannot make any comment.
The body of Majaw, the president of Jaiñtia Youth Federation (JYF) was found at Umsyllih near a dumping ground at Khliehriat, the district headquarters of East Jaiñtia Hills.
Police said that leader was hit by a metal wrench on the head leading to his death.
Majaw (38), who was also an architect by profession, had also filed a public interest litigation (PIL) against eight cement plants in the district for alleged “gross violation†of Forest Act, 1980.
Under his leadership, the JYF had also staged series of protest against the misappropriation of public funds by the former chief executive member (CEM) of Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council (JHADC) M Rymbai in 2014.
The protest, which was based on an RTI filed by two aggrieved beneficiaries from Khliehtyrshi which has exposed misappropriation of 1.18 crore, had also led to a tussle between the JYF and the former JHADC chief.
Recently, the organization has also opposed the proposed expansion project of a cement company.
Meanwhile condemning the killing, CSWO president, Agnes Kharshiing demanded immediate arrest of culprits involved in the crime.
She said that a candle-light vigil to condemn the killing of the social activist will be also organized at Khyndai Lad on Thursday.
