Shillong, Apr 18: Home Minister, James K Sangma on Wednesday sought the support of all concerned to fight against drugs menace in the state.
“I take this opportunity to solicit the support of all in our fight to combat the menace of drugs,†Sangma said while replying to a call attention motion moved by Congress MLA from Mawlai Process T Sawkmie in the Assembly here on Wednesday.
He said that the police are doing a commendable job by conducting raids and successfully seized different kinds of drugs from all over the state.
Sawkmie who referred to the arrest of four persons suspected to be peddlers and seizure of 400 grams of heroin from them from Mawlai Mawroh recently, urged the government to take steps to curb the menace while appreciating the police, NGOs, Dorbar Shnongs, educational institutions and churches for playing their role in fighting against the problem.
On the concern expressed by Sawkmie over the porous international border with Bangladesh and entry of drugs from outside the country, Sangma said that the government will take step to address the matter.
Earlier, the Congress legislator urged the state government to consider passing an official resolution to deal with the issue of drugs menace in the state.
“We have to take drastic action and it is high time that if the house agrees, a resolution should be brought,†he said.
According to him, drugs is silent killer that destroys the families and society as well.
