Shillong, Sept 13: The Hill State People Democratic Party (HSPDP) will hold the general council meeting of its East Khasi Hills Unit here on October 4.
This was decided during a meeting held on Thursday.
Speaking to reporters after the meeting, HSPDP East Khasi Hills Unit president Martle N. Mukhim said that the meeting discussed about holding the upcoming general council meeting of the East Khasi Hills unit, while also discussing about the party’s preparations for the upcoming elections to the KHADC next year.
On pre-poll alliance with the United Democratic Party (UDP) for the elections to the Khasi and Jaintia Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC), Mukhim said, “We want to ensure that the regional forces in the state are united and we hope that the UDP will work together with us in the upcoming MDC elections.â€
The two regional political parties had forged a pre-poll alliance in the Assembly elections for the 36 seats in Khasi and Jaintia region, but UDP managed to win only six seats while the HSPDP got only two MLAs. The UDP added one more MLA after it won from Ranikor seat in the recent bye elections. Both the parties formed the Regional Democratic Alliance (RDA).
The UDP and HSPDP are partners of the Meghalaya Democratic Alliance government led by the National People’s Party (NPP).
Mukhim said that the HSPDP is fully committed to further strengthen the MDA government, and urged all partners to work together as a family in the coalition government.
