Shillong, Apr 9: The Hynñiewtrep Youth Council (HYC) has demanded immediate cancellation of scheduled tribe (ST) certificates issued to three persons.
In statement issued here on Monday, the HYC publicity secretary Marcos Myrthong said that a delegation of the organization met the deputy commissioner of East Khasi Hills District, P.S. Dkhar and demanded cancellation of ST certificate of three persons – Varun Lyngdoh Singhania, Sneha Lyngdoh Singhania and their mother, Pearl Lyngdoh Singhania.
Earlier last year, the Registration Authority of the KHADC has declared Varun and Sneha as “non-Khasis†after they failed to fulfill the requirement as per provisions of KHAD (Khasi Social Custom of Lineage) Act, 1997.
This came following a petition filed by HYC general secretary Robertjune Kharjahrin on January 21, 2016.
Kharjahrin in his petition had alleged that the two siblings – Varun S Lyngdoh and Sheena S Lyngdoh obtained the Schedule Tribe Certificate by claiming that they belong to the Khasi community through “misrepresentation†of facts.
According to the HYC leader, this was done without first obtaining a Khasi Tribe Certificate as required under the Khasi Hills Autonomous District (Khasi Social Custom of Lineage) Act, 1997.
Myrthong further informed that the HYC has also demanded inquiry into the matter to know, on what ground was the ST certificates were issued to them and to also file a criminal case against them.
“The DC has assured us that he would look into the matter,†he said.
Meanwhile, the HYC also warned non-indigenous people from taking advantage and misusing of the tribal clan.
