Shillong, Sept 3: The Hynñiewtrep National Council (HYC) has demanded the state police to take effective steps to prevent illegal entry and settlement of foreign nationals into the state.
During a meeting with the Director General of Police (DGP), R. Chandranathan on Tuesday, the HYC submitted a memorandum to him and demanded to increase the strength of police personnel in the Anti-Infiltration Directorate and in all the districts of the state.
HYC president Robertjune Kharjahrin stressed the need to set up 24×7 check gates in each and every road both at the inter-state and international border of the state, in view of the publication of the final National Register of Citizen (NRC) list in Assam, where over 19 lakh persons have been excluded from the list.
“Those excluded from the NRC list may try to take shelter in the state of Meghalaya. If steps to check, verify and regulate the entry and settlement of outsiders, is not conducted, the state will face huge demographic problems in future,†he said.
The HYC requested the DGP to instruct all village defence parties (VDPs) to be watchful to prevent illegal immigrants from entering into their respective villages.
It also suggested that village authorities should be instructed to prepare and submit the register containing the names of all residents in their jurisdiction to the officer in-charge of their respective police stations at least twice a year.
