Irani says Congress-led government in Meghalaya fails to deliver

Shillong Feb 17: Union Information and Broadcasting Minister, Smriti Irani on Saturday slammed the Congress-led government in Meghalaya for its failure to deliver.

Addressing an election campaign in the city, Irani said that villages in Meghalaya did not get regular power supply and unable to provide safe drinking water to the people.

She said people in some areas have to also carry their loved ones to Bangladesh for medical treatment.

Irani also attacked the Congress government while pointing out to the incident where a minor girl was allegedly raped by Mawhati legislator, Julius Dorphang at Marvelene’s Inn, a guest house owned by the son of Home Minister H.D.R Lyngdoh.

She also alleged that the home minister and the administration of the state were keeping silent and has not taken any action.

“The responsibility of the Home Minister is to protect people and dignity of woman but what kind of a Home Minister here whose son played with the dignity of woman and police did not either arrest them or take action by the administration,” she said

Lauding the Narendra Modi-led government at the Centre, Irani said that six crore toilets have been built in the country including four lakh toilets in government schools, besides 31 crore bank accounts were opened since 2014.

Earlier during the day, Irani addressed a rally at Dalu to drum up support for BJP candidate, Kurosh R. Marak, who is also the sitting member of the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council.

She also accused the Congress-led government of failing in its responsibility for 50 years, which Prime Minister, Narendra Modi made it possible within three years.

“In absence of proper health care facilities our people have to avail treatment in neighbouring Bangladesh. This is a blot on Congress government that they have not been able to provide healthcare services to its people. Modi has subsidized the rate of crucial medicines but Mukul has failed to provide those medicines to the people of Meghalaya,” Irani said.
