Shillong, Feb 02: Jailed Independent legislator from Mawhati Julias Kitbok Dorphang and Independent legislator from South Tura John Leslee K Sangma resigned as members of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly on Friday.
Dorphang, a militant leader-turned-politician was jailed since last year for his alleged involvement in sexual exploitation of a minor. He is being booked under POCSO.
Dorphang submitted his resignation through his counsel.
Assembly Commissioner and Secretary Andrew Simons said that the resignation letters tendered by Dorphang and John were forwarded to the Speaker for information and necessary action.
While John may join NCP to become its candidate from South Tura, it was not known yet if Dorphang would also contest as the candidate of any political party from Mawhati.
