Shillong, June 21: The Jaiñtia Hills Autonomous District Council (JHADC) on Thursday elected Madonbai Rymbai as the new Chief Executive Member, the fourth CEM within four years since 2014.
Rymbai was elected to the post after an Executive Committee led by Moonlight Pariat as the CEM was reduced to a minority.
The EC led by Pariat collapsed after three members from his own party, the United Democratic Party (UDP), eight Congress members, and one BJP member withdrew their support.
Rymbai, who is the member from Sohmynting district council constituency, has joined the NPP last year.
With Rymbai as the Council’s chief, the NPP now is leading an Executive Committee in the 30-member Council.
Interestingly, the opposition Congress also working together with the NPP and BJP in JHADC, though in the state, the NPP and Congress are rivals.
In the state, the Congress sits in Opposition. However NPP which is leading the MDA government, has the support from other regional parties which include the UDP, PDF, HSPDP, besides the BJP, NCP and Independents.
A coalition named as the Jaintia Democratic Alliance (JDA) was also formed under the leadership of the new CEM, and the alliance is being supported by 23 members, which comprised of 11 MDCs from the NPP, 8 Congress members, three members of the UDP, and one BJP member.
But the 7 members of the UDP including the former CEM, Moonlight Pariat are yet to decide whether to be part of the ruling JDA.
