Shillong, May 28: Justice AK Mittal, a senior-most judge from Punjab was sworn in as the new Chief Justice of the Meghalaya High Court on Tuesday.
Governor Tathagata Roy administered the oath of office to the new chief justice at the swearing in ceremony held at the Raj Bhavan here in the presence of chief minister Conrad K Sangma, cabinet ministers and other dignataries.
Speaking to reporters, Mittal said, “I would like to understand the difficulties of Meghalaya and would like to solve them also…â€
“I will have to visit all the districts and see how things are functioning here to get first hand information and in view of the High Court also if anything is required I will make improvement,†he said.
His appointment was following the retirement of chief justice Mohammad Yaqoob Mir.
Justice Mittal obtained his law degree from Delhi University in 1980. After enrolling as an advocate that same year, he practiced in the areas of Constitutional law, service law, company law and tax law. He was elevated as a judge of the Punjab and Haryana High Court in January 2004. Between May and June 2018, he also served as the Acting Chief Justice of the High Court.
