KHADC CEM welcomes decision of UDA members to support UPF-led EC, offer to Kharpuri closed

Shillong, Feb 3: Chief Executive Member (CEM) of the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC), Latiplang Kharkongor on Monday welcomed the decision of two members of the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) to support the United Democratic Forum (UDF)-led Executive Committee.

This came a day after Paul Lyngdoh (Jaïaw) and Teiborlang Pathaw (Mawlai) of the United Democratic Party (UDP) submitted a letter extending their full support to the Executive Committee led by Kharkongor.

Lyngdoh and Pathaw had stated that they have taken the decision in view of the prevailing crisis and impasse in the Council and the need to bring back its administration on track.

With this, the strength of the UDF has increased to 16 while the UDA-led by UDP was reduced to 14 in the House of 29.

“I am very glad that they (Lyngdoh and Pathaw) have decided to support the EC,” Kharkongor told reporters here on Monday.

The KHADC chief assured that the two MDCs will be inducted in the executive committee. Kharkongor informed that the Governor has already approved the list of five executive members and is now waiting for the official order.

Earlier, Kharkongor had proposed the name of Nongshken MDC, Grace Mary Kharpuri for the post of deputy chief executive member. However, Kharpuri, who is presently supporting the UDA, has declined the offer.

The CEM said that the UDF is not in a mood to make the offer again to Kharpuri but the door is open for her to support the alliance.
