Shillong, Dec 4: Chief executive member (CEM) of the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC), Latiplang Kharkongor on Wednesday accused chief minister, Conrad K Sangma of not abiding by the Indian Constitution.

Reacting to CM’s statement that the KHADC is without a CEM, Kharkongor said, ” the Chief Minister is a fool to make such statement. I was elected to the post in the floor of the House and the same was already approved by the Governor. I was elected as per rule framed as per provisions of the Sixth Schedule of the Indian Constitution, and I don’t need the state government’s recognition.”

The newly elected CEM also reminded the chief minister that while taking oath, he had promised to abide by the Constitution of India.

“Who is a fool here, and who is not abiding by the Constitution of India?” Kharkongor asked, while maintaining that there is nothing in the rules of the District Council which says that election of the CEM should be notified by the state government.

“By saying that the KHADC is without a CEM, the CM is only making a fool out of himself,” he said.

Earlier, District Council Affairs Minister James K Sangma had maintained that the state government is yet to notify the election of the CEM, and the matter was being examined.
