KHADC chief resigns, members to elect new CEM on Wednesday

Shillong, July 10: Chief Executive Member (CEM) of the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) Pynshngaiñlang N. Syiem resigned from the post on Tuesday after losing majority support from members of the Council.

Syiem resigned from the post without facing the floor test in the session convened by Governor.

Syiem was leading an Executive Committee of the coalition People’s Democratic Alliance (PDA) in the KHADC.

Meanwhile members of the KHADC will elect their new CEM on Wednesday.

Members of the KHADC have also formed a new coalition known as Khasi Hills Democratic Alliance (KHDA) and all members will support the candidature of National People’s Party (NPP) member from Nongkrem, H.S. Shylla in the election to the CEM post.

Shylla said that Syiem should not resign as CEM but he should face the session so that members can discuss issues related to financial irregularities the Council in the House.

Shylla has the support of 17 members in the 29-member Council. The members comprised of 5 MDCs of the United Democratic Party (UDP), 4 MDCs each of the National People’s Party (NPP) and People’s Democratic Front (PDF), 3 MDCs of the Hill State People Democratic Party (HSPDP) and 1 Independent.

Syiem was elected to the CEM post on May 15, 2015, while Shylla had become the CEM of the KHADC from July 28, 2004 to February 05, 2008. This is the second time that Shylla would take over as the CEM of the KHADC.
