KHADC demands arrest of man for derogatory remarks

SHILLONG, MAY 29: The Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) has sought immediate arrest of one person from Assam for his derogatory remarks against tribal women while opposing the demand for Inner-Line Permit in the state.

The letter was sent by one person who identified himself as Dr Baharull Islam from Sijubari Charali, Haligaon, Kamrup (Metro), Assam to the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) general secretary Donald V Thabah on May 22.

The same letter was also addressed to the Urban Affairs Minister and former KSU leader Hamletson Dohling and the KHADC chief executive member (CEM) Titosstarwell Chyne.

Addressing media persons on Friday, Chyne told reporters that the executive committee of the KHADC has taken cognizance and strongly condemned the derogatory remarks made in the letter against the dignity of tribal women.

“We have decided to write to the state government through the home department requesting that the matter should be taken up with the Assam government and ensure that the culprit is immediately arrested,” he said.

He said the letter is designed to rake up communal tension by attacking on the identity, culture and tradition of the indigenous community, which is not acceptable at all.

“I also urged women leaders to come forward and oppose such attempt to degrade the image and dignity of tribal women,” the CEM said.

At the same, he also called upon the non-tribal residents of the region to extend their support and cooperation to ensure persons involved in such attempt to disrupt peace and communal harmony, is brought to book.

Asked, the KHADC CEM said that the council is yet to decide on whether to file an FIR against the sender of the letter.

“Today if ILP is required in the state then, it is required to keep Muslims out of state, as Muslim is world most dangerous creature and no one will be safe from their hands. There is lots of difference between Bengali speaking Muslims and Hindu Bengalis and if KSU fail to understand differences, the name of Meghalaya wil be Muslimalaya in 2050 not Hindualaya,” the letter read.
