SHILLONG, FEB 3: The Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) on Tuesday underscored the crucial role of community participation in effective governance during an interaction with a media delegation from Karnataka.
Chairman and Executive Members of the Council provided a comprehensive overview of the role, powers, and responsibilities of Autonomous District Councils (ADCs) functioning under the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution of India. They explained how the KHADC plays a pivotal role in preserving the customs, traditions, and cultural identity of the Khasi people, while also addressing the administrative and developmental needs of the region.
The interaction was chaired by Strong Kharjana, Chairman, KHADC. Senior officials present included Powell Sohkhlet, Executive Member (Information Technology); Seibor Warbah, Executive Member (Finance); Denzil Chen, Executive Member (Elaka); Deiti Majaw, Executive Member (Law); and D.G. Syiemiong, Secretary, Executive Committee.
Council members elaborated on key governance aspects such as the functioning of traditional institutions, administration of Elakas, implementation of customary laws, and land and resource management systems. They stressed that consensus-based decision-making and active community involvement are essential for maintaining social harmony and ensuring effective grassroots governance.
Discussions also covered financial administration, legal frameworks, the use of information technology in governance, and various developmental initiatives undertaken by the Council. The members highlighted ongoing efforts to strengthen institutional capacity, enhance service delivery, and address development challenges while safeguarding indigenous rights and environmental sustainability.
The visiting media delegation actively engaged with the KHADC leadership, seeking clarifications on the autonomous governance system and its relevance in contemporary administration. The interaction provided journalists with valuable first-hand insights into Meghalaya’s unique administrative framework, which blends traditional practices with modern governance.
Members of the media delegation appreciated the opportunity to interact directly with KHADC leadership and noted that the engagement would enable them to present informed and accurate perspectives on Meghalaya’s governance structure and cultural heritage to a wider national audience.
