Shillong, Aug 20: The Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) has sought more time to file an affidavit with regards to cleanliness of the Umïam Lake.
This was informed during a hearing conducted by the division bench of the Meghalaya High Court on the public interest litigation (PIL) seeking its intervention on the matter on Tuesday.
In view of this, the hearing was adjourned to September 12. Notice in this connection was also served to the state government.
In its order passed earlier, the bench said that the cleanliness of Umïam Lake is potentially affecting tourism and also casing health hazard to inhabitants of the state of Meghalaya.
Meanwhile, the Meghalaya Energy Corporation Limited (MeECL) had recently informed the Assembly Committee on Environment that the life span of the Umïam dam has been reduced by 41 years due to heavy siltation and pollution.
