Khasi language issue: HSPDP asks Govt to bring out official resolution

Shillong, Oct 16: The Opposition Hill State People Democratic Party (HSPDP) has demanded from the Congress-led government in the state to bring an official resolution to urge the Central government to give Khasi language its due recognition in the Eight Schedule of the Constitution.

“We demand from the government to bring out an official resolution and send the same to the Centre for getting Khasi language included into the Eight Schedule of the Constitution,” HSPDP media cell in-charge Londoner Sohtun said in a statement issued here on Monday.

The demand came after chief minister, Mukul Sangma gave an assurance to a delegation of the Khasi Authors’ Society (KAS) recently that the government would soon constitute an Advisory Committee to further study the issue and speed up the process of getting Khasi language listed in the Eight Schedule.

“We are shocked by the CM’s assurance to constitute an Advisory Committee to examine the recommendations made by the Official Committee, which comprises of MLAs from different political parties, intellectuals and others,” he said.

On the formation of an Advisory Committee, the HSPDP questioned, “what is left for this new committee to discuss when the fact is that, the Official Committee had already recommended to the government to table the official resolution for consideration of the Assembly.”

“This government, even after one year, is keeping silent on the matter and now the government is in a hurry to constitute an Advisory Committee, which seems to be just a political gimmick to fool the people of the state ahead of the Assembly election,” the HSPDP said.
