Shillong, May 23: The Khun Hynniewtrep National Awakening Movement (KHNAM) on Wednesday expressed strong opposition against the Centre’s Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016 to grant citizenship to illegal immigrants from Bangladesh, Afghanistan and Pakistan.
In a statement issued here on Wednesday, KHNAM-state youth wing president Thomas Passah said, “The Bill is nothing but a political trick of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to popularise the party during elections.â€
He said that the BJP had in its election manifesto before the 2014 Lok Sabha elections had stated that India will be made a home for all Hindus including those residing in other countries.
Urging the people of the state including political parties to stand united against the move of the Centre, Passah said that the party also extends full support to protests staged by different groups against the Citizenship (Amendment) Bill, 2016.
