KHNAM legislator asks party President to step down

Shillong, August 21: The lone Khun Hynniewtrep National Awakening Movement (KHNAM) legislator Adelbert Nongrum has demanded the party’s Chief Pyndapborlang Saibon to step down from the post following the alleged “hasty” decision taken by him along with few leaders of the central executive committee (CEC) to announce the candidates for two constituencies – Mawkhar and Jaiaw for the upcoming MDC elections to be held next year.

“When the EC had refused to accept my resignation as working president of the party, I had sent a letter demanding the stepping down of Saibon because of the misunderstanding that was created in the party due to this decision,” Nongrum told reporters after a meeting held with party workers from the different units on Monday night.

Nongrum along with THS Bonney, who is also the working president of the party have expressed concern on the decision which they alleged was taken without the consent of the central executive committee of the party.

It may be mentioned here that the CEC led by Pyndapborlang Saibon had announced the party’s decision to field Rocky Hek from Mawkhar-Pynthorumkhrah constituency and Thomas Passah, party youth wing president, from Jaiaw constituency.

Terming this decision as an attempt to weakened the party in the upcoming bye-election, Nongrum, who is also the sitting Jaiaw MDC of the party said that in fact he had proposed the name of Glenbert Khongwir from Mawkhar-Pynthorumkhrah, who has got the support of the party workers and supporters from the different units of the constituency.

“However, the CEC has rejected the name of Khongwir without any reason and went ahead defying the decision of the units who carries the voice of the people of the constituency,” he said.

The KHNAM legislator from North Shillong also announced that the meeting has decided to defy the CEC’s decision by supporting Khongwir in the upcoming MDC elections.

“I will also extend my full support to Khongwir and I don’t mind even if they expel me from the party because I will always follow the principle of the party,” he said.

According to him, as the working president and member of the CEC, he expected that the Election Committee of the party to function in a transparent manner and without partiality.
