Shillong, March 21: Thomas Passah, Working President of the Khun Hynniewtrep National Awakening Movement (KHNAM), has raised serious concerns over alleged irregularities in the functioning of the Labour Department in Meghalaya, particularly in the implementation of minimum wage laws.

Addressing the media, Passah alleged that many workers across the state are not being paid in accordance with legally mandated minimum wages, despite clear provisions under existing labour laws. He claimed that several employers and companies are underpaying workers, amounting to exploitation and violation of labour rights.

He further pointed to weak monitoring and poor enforcement as key reasons behind the persistence of such practices. “The rules exist, but they are often ignored. This has led to widespread irregularities in wage payments and in safeguarding the welfare of workers,” he said.

Passah also highlighted the growing challenge of unemployment and underemployment, noting that many workers are compelled to accept lower wages due to limited job opportunities.

Criticising the Labour Department’s functioning, he said gaps in enforcement have allowed illegal practices to continue unchecked. He called for stricter inspections, enhanced accountability, and greater transparency to ensure compliance with labour laws.

The KHNAM leader also stressed the need for policy reforms and effective implementation to improve socio-economic conditions and ensure fairness for workers.

He urged the state government to prioritise labour welfare, eliminate exploitative practices, and ensure that the benefits of development reach all sections of society.
