Khliehriat, August 16, 2025 (EJH): The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU), East Jaintia Hills District Unit, carried out a checking drive along National Highway-6 on Saturday to screen outsiders entering Meghalaya from Assam’s Barak Valley.
During the exercise, several individuals were found without valid documents such as Labour Licence, Work Permit, or other required papers. While those lacking documentation were sent back, the Union allowed travelers who were only transiting through Meghalaya on their way from Silchar to Guwahati to proceed.
The Union said the initiative was prompted by reports that suspected Bangladeshi migrants, currently being evicted in Assam through an ongoing eviction drive, are attempting to enter Meghalaya. According to KSU, the absence of stringent entry regulations like the Inner Line Permit (ILP)—already in force in several North-Eastern states—makes Meghalaya vulnerable.
Calling for urgent action, KSU-East Jaintia Hills urged the state government to immediately implement the ILP in Meghalaya and to strengthen the Meghalaya Residents Safety and Security Act (MRSSA) to regulate the entry of outsiders more effectively.
The Union further resolved to intensify such checking drives across the district to, in its words, “safeguard the state and protect the indigenous people from any potential threat.”
