Shillong, April 4: The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) on Saturday observed Khasi National Awakening Day with a large rally in Shillong, reaffirming its commitment to safeguarding the identity, rights, and unity of the Khasi community.

The rally commenced from the Bharat Scouts and Guides premises and passed through key parts of the city before culminating at Lumshatsngi. Participants included KSU members, school students, elders, and representatives of various dorbar shnong, showcasing broad community participation.

Amid tight security arrangements by law enforcement agencies, the rally was conducted peacefully. Participants carried placards and raised slogans emphasising unity, protection of indigenous rights, and awareness against social and cultural threats.

Addressing the gathering, KSU president Lambok Marngar stated that the union has stood the test of time and continues to play a crucial role in awakening the consciousness of the Khasi people. He cautioned that divisive forces are attempting to weaken the community from within and stressed the need for collective vigilance.

He also raised serious concerns over the issue of influx, describing it as one of the major challenges facing the state. Marngar criticised certain sections within the community for failing to support the cause of the Jaidbynriew (indigenous people), urging greater unity and solidarity for the collective good.

Union leaders reiterated that Khasi National Awakening Day is not merely symbolic but serves as a reminder of every citizen’s responsibility to safeguard their heritage, culture, and land. They also called upon the youth to remain informed, disciplined, and actively engaged in community issues.

The programme concluded with a strong message of unity and renewed commitment to uphold the rights and identity of the Khasi people in the face of emerging challenges.
