Shillong, September 19, 2025: The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) Central Body has formally submitted a letter to the Syiem of Hima Maharam in South West Khasi Hills, calling for a public clarification on several matters that it says are affecting the welfare and rights of the people of the Hima.
In the letter, the Union outlined four major concerns:
Army Land (Approx. 70 acres):
KSU opposed the BSF’s plan to set up a residential base, schools, hospital, and other facilities on approximately 70 acres of land, saying this contradicts the intended purpose of a frontline security outpost. The Union urged the Syiem to issue a clear explanation to the public regarding this development.
Land Documents:
The Union questioned why a significant number of non-Khasis had reportedly been allotted land within the Hima, while only a minority of local indigenous Khasi residents benefitted from such allotments.
Status of the Lyngdohs and Basans:
KSU demanded clarity on the traditional roles and authority of the five Lyngdohs and Basans under Hima Maharam, both historically and in the present day.
Powers of Village Myntris:
The Union expressed concern over whether the Syiem has the power to unilaterally alter rules through the Sanad Myntri, and questioned the decision to shift certain powers to specific clans rather than exercising them as Syiem.
The KSU warned that failure to provide transparent answers to these issues could lead to public anger and unrest, and urged the Syiem and village leaders to address the matter in the interest of peace and stability.
