Shillong, Nov 29: The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) Mawryngkneng Circle has served an ultimatum to the state government to consider upgrading the Mawryngkneng C&RD block into a full-fledged civil sub-division before December 8.
“We decided to give time to the state government to consider the demand before the upcoming winter session of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly,” KSU Mawryngkneng Circle general secretary Shiningstar Kharbihkhiew said in a statement issued here on Wednesday.
The KSU has threatened to launch agitations in the three constituencies – Mawryngkneng, Mawkynrew and Nongkrem if the state government failed to fulfill the demand.
According to him, the block has over 64 villages falling under three assembly constituencies –Mawryngkneng, Mawkynrew and Nongkrem, with a population of 67,291 as per 2011 population census.
“The protest will also be against the three sitting MLAs representing the respective constituencies – David Nongrum, Remington Pyngrope and Ardent M. Basaiawmoit – for their failure to voice out the long pending aspiration of the people,” Kharbihkhiew said.
Informing that a memorandum in this regard was submitted to the chief minister Mukul Sangma on October 30, Kharbihkhiew said, “unfortunately, the state government turned a deaf ear to the demand.”
The KSU stated that upgradation of Mawryngkneng C&RD Block to Civil Sub-Division will ensure better governance and bring administration closer to the people.
