Shillong, Oct 29: The race for the Shillong Premier League (SPL) 2025 has concluded with Langsning FC lifting the championship trophy, but the football action in the city is far from over — the inaugural Shillong Super Cup 2025 is set to kick off this Friday.
Organised by the Shillong Sports Association (SSA), the brand-new tournament will bring together the Top 6 teams from the SPL 2025 — Langsning, Shillong Lajong, Mawlai, Nangkiew Irat, Rangdajied United, and Sawmer — in a thrilling five-match knockout competition.
The Super Cup has been introduced this year to complement the SPL and provide mid-table teams additional incentive to perform strongly. It also promises fans extra excitement, as the best six clubs in Shillong battle it out in a high-stakes, winner-takes-all format.
As SPL champions and runners-up, Langsning and Shillong Lajong have received direct byes into the semifinals. The remaining four teams will clash in the quarterfinals, scheduled for Friday and Saturday — both matches kicking off at 5 PM.
In the first quarterfinal, Nangkiew Irat will face Rangdajied United on Friday, while Mawlai will take on Sawmer on Saturday.
Nangkiew Irat and Rangdajied previously drew 1-1 in their SPL encounter on September 5, while Mawlai thrashed Sawmer 6-2 on August 7.
Nangkiew Irat, long seen as underdogs to Rangdajied, turned the tables this season by challenging for the title and finishing fourth, while RUFC recovered from a poor start to end fifth — a below-par result for one of Shillong’s most storied clubs.
Mawlai, meanwhile, narrowly missed out on their third SPL title after being held to a draw by Rangdajied in their final match — a result that handed Langsning the championship. Their opponents Sawmer, who endured a tough season, managed only one notable win — a 1-0 victory over Rangdajied.
While past form offers clues, the Shillong Super Cup is an entirely new battlefield where anything can happen. With five knockout matches lined up, local football fans are in for an action-packed finale to the 2025 season.
