LGBTQ community celebrates in Shillong, urges Churches to accept them

Shillong, Sept 7: LGBTQ community came together to celebrate in Shillong city the verdict of Supreme Court that decriminalized gay sex by striking down Section 377 of the Indian Penal Code and appealed to Churches to also accept them.

The LGBTQ community held an impromptu gathering at Laitumkhrah, after their celebration at Khyndai Lad was not permitted in view of the present law and order situation.

“As the SC brought changes in the country, I want the same changes to be there in our state the acceptance for the community as human especially the churches as they are really against (us),” LGBTQ community leader, Donna Marweiñ said.

Marweiñ said that even if the Supreme Court has struck down section 377, but the stigma and discrimination remained which “We will still fight for our own rights.”

Another community member, Vishal Blah said that people in Shillong accepted them for the way they are, except for a few with (negative) mentality which happened everywhere.
