Shillong, Nov 12: The strike by limestone truck drivers has been called off following the release of Bah Moselandar Marngar, President of the Meghalaya Commercial Truck Owners and Drivers Association (MCTODA).
The suspension of the agitation came after discussions and assurances from various leaders that the state government would take up the truckers’ concerns and work toward resolving their long-pending issues. It was further informed that a special meeting will be held with Deputy Chief Minister Bah Prestone Tynsong on November 14, to deliberate on the problems and demands raised by the MCTODA and the truckers.
The strike was triggered by grievances over delays in the issuance of challans, frequent halting of trucks, and other challenges related to the transportation of limestone within the state. MCTODA expressed optimism that the upcoming dialogue with the Deputy Chief Minister would lead to a positive and lasting resolution for all stakeholders.
Meanwhile, residents of Mawryngkneng organised a small felicitation programme on Monday to welcome the four MCTODA members who were granted bail by the court on November 11. The event was held as a mark of appreciation for their efforts in defending the rights of truck owners and drivers across Meghalaya.
MCTODA President Bah Moselandar Marngar extended his gratitude to Bah Peter Lawai, the Sordar of Mawryngkneng, and to all residents for their solidarity and cooperation in ensuring that the protest remained peaceful throughout.
Bah Kyrmen Uriah, who has been actively supporting MCTODA, said he had helped facilitate communication between the association leaders and the state government, paving the way for dialogue under the government’s initiative. He noted that the prolonged strike had affected the livelihoods of many, making a swift resolution vital.
Deputy Chief Minister Bah Prestone Tynsong has confirmed that he will hold a consultative meeting with MCTODA leaders on November 14, with the aim of reaching a peaceful and mutually beneficial solution to the issues faced by truckers in the state.
