Imphal, Sep 10: Manipur’s opposition Congress party has opposed the decision to pass the controversial Citizenship Amendment Bill.
“We oppose Citizenship Amendment Bill as it will destroy the primary existence of our indigenous people on our own indigenous lands in our own North East India region,†Congress Spokesperson, Ningombam Bupenda Meitei said.
On Monday, Home Minister Amit Shah had announced at the 4th Convention of the North East Democratic Alliance (NEDA) that if at all the Citizenship Amendment Bill (CAB) is ever implemented, it would have no bearings on the North-Eastern states, which enjoy special provisions under the Indian Constitution
“Is North East Democratic Alliance (NEDA) a platform to declare CAB to be passed by Modi government,†Meitei asked demanding from NEDA partners to clarify their stand on Citizenship Bill and whether they would still support to BJP after Shah’s statement.
The stir opposing Citizenship Amendment Bill in Manipur had completely affected life prior to the Lok Sabha elections.
Most political parties, civil society groups had opposed the Bill as there is strong apprehension of the indigenous people becoming minority in the state as it happened in Tripura.
